What’s Holding You Back?

How many times has someone asked you,

What’s holding you back?

Great question, isn’t it?

If you KNEW the answer, you’d have it made!

I’ve noticed that many folks are caught up in the “yeah, but…” mentality

That kind of mindset that focuses on the roadblocks

The problems

The limitations

Indulge me for a moment and consider that this is where your business (and perhaps even your life) breaks down.

Try this one on for size…

A breakdown cannot appear WITHOUT the possibility of a breakthrough!

In other words, the “block” could not appear unless there
was something beyond it.

Think about that for a moment.

I mean REALLY stop reading and think about that.

What I’m suggesting is every “breakdown” you encounter is
actually presenting the possibility for a breakthrough to you.

I know…you’re probably thinking,
“Great, Cathie! Thanks for the philosophical mumbo-jumbo.
What good does that do me TODAY?”

Hang in there with me for a minute…

I read Noah St.John’s book, The Secret Code of Success
recently where he talks about “negative reflections”…
those thoughts in our heads, generally placed there years
ago, that tell us why we CAN’T. (great book, by the way)

We ALL have them, you know.

Thoughts like “you’re not good enough to…” that pop up
and stop us dead in our tracks.

It’s that voice we have in our heads that tells us what our
limits are, why something won’t work, how foolish we look, etc.

“What voice? What is she talking about? I don’t have a
voice in my head.”

Yup…that’s the one! :)

For just a moment, look past the limits that voice imposes
on you and notice how that voice is focused on the PAST

Consider for a moment what your life would be like if you
tried the future on for size started living in POSSIBILITY

The possibility of who you really are

The possibility of having what you really want

The possibility of living the life of your dreams!

The great author, Napoleon Hill said that what the mind
can conceive and believe , it can achieve.

Identify and discard those thoughts that are holding you
hostage and believe in your possibility.

And break through to making that vision of yours a reality.

Is Your Business Still Sitting On The Launch Pad?

I grew up in the early days of space exploration
and all that space travel stuff still intrigues me
to this day.

It was fascinating.  Laying on our lawn at night,
staring up into the darkness, waiting for…then
spotting…that tiny white light moving across the
night sky.

THEY called it Sputnik.

My 8 year old child mind called it amazing.

Then came Alan Shepard.  Up and splash down.
Space capsule recovered. Thrilling!

Oh, and John Glenn! He ORBITED the Earth before
he splashed down!  Unbelievable!

It was science fiction come to life!!

So on we went until that fabulous July afternoon
when I sat, afraid to breathe, mesmerized by what
was on the TV screen.

Then, at last, we heard it.

Neil Armstrong’s voice from over TWO HUNDRED  THOUSAND MILES AWAY…

“One small step for man…”

I still get chills when I think of it.

And look how far we’ve come since 1969!

Amazing, isn’t it?

Back then, the world stopped to watch every
launch, saw the flames begin to shoot from the
rocket and heard those now famous words,
“Houston, we have lift off.”

Did you know that the largest percentage of a
rocket’s fuel is used just to get those things
off the ground?

And that once they break free from the Earth’s
atmosphere, they use very little energy to stay
on course?

I find myself thinking how this could apply to
our businesses, as well

Stick with me here for a moment…

When you first began, your objective was to get
things moving…to “lift off”, so to speak.

So there you were…on the launching pad…
sputtering and spurting every now and then

Then…You LAUNCHED

And maybe, just maybe, using that huge energy
surge, you broke free!

Good for YOU!! :)

Or it started and fizzled?

Is Your Business Going Down In Flames?

I heard a story about a fabulous, multi-million building
complex that was burning out of control…

It was well known for its large, enclosed courtyard with its
elaborate gardens and was nestled serenely at the foot of a hill.

After several alarms, many large fire trucks surrounded the
building, but the firemen were unable to put out the blaze.

All of a sudden, a smaller fire truck careened down the hill,
crashed through the walls of the blazing building and into the
courtyard where it stopped.

Immediately, the men jumped off and began fighting
the stubborn flames.

To everyone’s amazement, the fire was soon out.

As you might imagine, the team from that truck became instant
heroes and in appreciation for their bravery and selfless
actions, the building’s owner gave the fire department a
rather substantial contribution.

When the small fire squad was asked how they might use
the money, its Captain said,

“Well, first thing we’re going to do is
get the brakes on that truck fixed!”

Sure, the story is humorous, but it’s also thought provoking.

We all come across barriers…walls…that seem to be preventing
us from what we want to accomplish.

And at times, we need to take a serious look at changing the way
we’re doing certain things.

But most of us don’t like change, do we?

Some reasons we’re reluctant might be…

• We’re familiar with the methods we’re using
• We would have to invest time to learn new methods
• We want someone to TELL us what to do
• We don’t think we can do it
• We don’t want to upset anyone or are worried what
others may think

I’m sure there are as many reasons as there are people,
but the fact remains…people resist changing.

But let me ask you…

Is your business going down in flames?

If You’re Looking For The Key To Success, This Is It!

So I was up really, really late last night.

Which meant I got a later-than-usual start this morning

Only an hour later, but that’s enough to cut into my day.

And I have to go to the grocery store today, too.

So what has all that got to do with a Key to Success?

Glad you asked  ;-)

If you’re anything like me, when you’re in a schedule
crunch, you prioritize your tasks (either mentally or
on paper) and begin to put some things on tomorrow’s
“to do” list.

Right?

Now stay with me here…

I was told a long time ago to study successful people
and look for the common thread among them and on
MLSP’s weekly training last night (which by the way, was
OUTSTANDING), Ray Higdon mentioned this CRITICAL
success key.

I’ve heard Diane Hochman, Todd Falcone and other industry
leaders talk about it.

Napoleon Hill, Stephen Covey, John Maxwell and others have
written extensively about it.

I’ve read books and seen the examples set by Michael Jordan,
Gary Vaynerchek, Thomas Edison, Tom Monaghan…this list
could go on and on because really ALL successful people,
regardless of the industry, have done it.

Still with me?

Good!

It doesn’t matter what you’re looking to do, where you want
to end up in life or what results you want to achieve.

To be successful,

YOU MUST BE CONSISTENT!!

So now you’re probably thinking, “Geez Louise! I’ve heard
that a gazillion times before, Cathie.  I thought you had
some special, magical secret to tell me!”

I just did.

It takes more than hearing it. You MUST embrace it with
all you’ve got.

Not, “Oh I tried that for a month and it didn’t work

Not hit or miss.

Not when you “feel” like it or it’s convenient.

To be successful, it takes consistent DAILY effort.

And so…

Even though I got up an hour later than usual

Even though I’m a bit groggy cause I stayed up really
late

And even though I have to go grocery shopping today

My daily routine for my business HAS to be my top
priority!

Because being consistent is CRITICAL!

Go Ahead…Get Angry!!

We all want to be happy, joyful, fulfilled, successful, etc.

It seems everywhere you look, people are creating life maps
and vision boards, spending time meditating, journaling and
affirming, reading books and listening to CD’s…

It’s become such an OBSESSION that self-improvement has
become a multi-TRILLION dollar industry!
(that’s trillion with a “T”)

There’s so much talk about positive thinking and attitudes
these days, that many people seem to have come to the
conclusion that there’s something really BAD or WRONG when
they feel anger.

NOTHING could be further from the truth!!

Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe that thinking
positively and maintaining a positive attitude are
ESSENTIAL to success in life.

And all that stuff I talked about up there?

The meditating, journaling, affirming and envisioning?

I do that stuff, too!!

But I think that anger, in and of itself, has been
misunderstood and gotten a “bad rap” in general.

You may find this hard to believe, but anger, especially
anger with yourself, can actually be a POSITIVE FORCE
in your life.

And hopefully, by the time you’re done reading this article,
you’ll have a better understanding of what I mean.

Emotions Are Energy

We all come to this planet with a complete set of emotions
totally functional and ready to go!

Picture an infant, wide eyed and smiling sweetly at you…
then all red-faced and screaming its head off!

Yup, we arrive fully equipped alright!!

What many people don’t realize is ALL the emotions we feel
are pure energy.

They’re our very own, PERSONAL energy source.

Think about it…when we’re excited about something, it
“energizes” us making it difficult for us to sleep. And
when an intense emotional experience is over, we feel tired,
drained and sapped of energy.

And just like love, joy, fear, excitement and all the other
emotions we humans have, anger is an emotion, which means
it’s energy, too.

And as with any energy source, it can be channeled either
positively or negatively.

USE Your Anger

The important thing to remember is not to BE anger, but
to use its energy to fuel your actions instead.

What do I mean?

Let’s say you’re not happy with your present circumstances.

Maybe you want to be making more money, recruiting more
team members or selling more products.

If that dissatisfaction continues, it can (and often does)
turn into anger.

So what do you DO?

Stay ticked off and complain?

Start blaming and bad-mouthing others like your teachers,
team, upline or company?

Maybe even quit?

OR…

USE that anger you’re feeling as an energy source to continue
pushing you forward?

You can channel the energy from your anger to become more laser
focused and determined than ever.

It’s a matter of recognizing your ability to change your
present situation, harnessing the energy of your anger and
DOING something about it.

Three Simple Steps

There’s really nothing mystical about channeling your anger
(or any emotion, for that matter). Just follow these simple steps:

Identify your anger. What precisely are you angry about?
Be as detailed with yourself as you possibly can. You’ll want to
write this down, by the way.

Look for ways that you can change the situation. Maybe
you’d enroll more people if you made more phone calls or sell
more products by connecting with more people in your niche
market.  The point here is to look for something that YOU can
do to change the situation.

Do it. Sounds simple because it is. Do what it is you know
you need to do to change the situation. Then, when you begin
slacking off (and you will), remember how angry you felt. You
might want to read what you wrote in step one. Let yourself
re-experience the feeling for a moment…then with renewed
energy, get back to it!

Above all, remember that anger is a normal, natural emotion
that EVERYONE has from time to time and feeling angry doesn’t
mean you’re “bad”.

It’s what you DO with it that matters.

So go ahead, GET ANGRY…and use it as fuel to change your life!!!

Recruiting and Sponsoring Are NOT The Same Thing!

In the years that I’ve been involved with Network
Marketing, I’ve known plenty of “master recruiters”.

You know…those men and women who seem to be able to
persuade practically ANYONE they come in contact with
to join their organization.

They’re the ones who are able to REALLY CONNECT with
people, plus they seem to have a reassuring way about
them that can establish trust in just minutes.

But just because someone is able to recruit well doesn’t
mean they’re good sponsors.

There have been (sadly) many recruiting whizzes I’ve
seen over the years whose main concern was the size…
not the quality…of their team.

These “all stars” amass large numbers, even make lots
of money, but don’t take the time to teach and train
their new distributors.

They make promises, sure, but they rarely follow through,
leaving behind them a host of “ex-network marketers”
and giving the industry a bad name to boot!

Of course, when people get discouraged and fall away
(as they will), their stock answer always seems to be
“90% quit in the first three months.”

Statistically, that may be true, but how many of them
might still be on board IF their recruiter was also an
effective sponsor?

Because…please hear me…

There’s a DIFFERENCE between recruiting and sponsoring!

Recruiting Is An Action Word

According to Miriam-Webster, RECRUIT (verb) means “to
seek to enroll; to fill up the number with new members”

The way I read it, that means recruiting is an action.

It’s what we DO to interest someone in our opportunity
enough to cause them to join our team. And because it’s
an activity folks with different personalities engage in,
there are likely THOUSANDS of methods to choose from.

Some people like using the telephone and just chatting,
while others MUST have their favorite script as a guide.

Still others prefer email campaigns.

Then there are direct mailings, sizzle lines, hotel meetings
and home parties…the list goes on.

Your preferred recruiting activity may be something that
would cause me to break out in hives, and vice-versa.

But whatever you DO to get new members on board, once
they join…you’re a SPONSOR.

A Sponsor Is Who You ARE

So let’s take a quick look at the dictionary again.

SPONSOR (noun) means “one who assumes responsibility
for some other person or thing” (emphasis mine)

Hmmm…does that mean that we’re responsible for a person’s
success or failure?

Sort of…but not totally.

Let me explain.

It IS up to us to get our new team member off on the
right foot by pointing them to the company trainings,
introducing them to our upline, etc.

It’s our responsibility to provide or point to the
answers to all those questions new people have.

Basically, we show them the ropes. (In some companies,
this may mean demonstrating how to do a presentation at
their Aunt Tillie’s house some Sunday afternoon)

We regard them as a new student, so to speak, and teach
them what they need to know to stand on their own.

Those Are Important Words – ON THEIR OWN

HOWEVER…..

There are those folks who, for whatever reason, have more
excuses than determination.

Perhaps they started with enthusiasm, but now all you
seem to get from them is opposition, complaints and
“reasons” for their lack of action.

They tell you why they can’t plug into company trainings,
don’t have time to read their distributor manual, won’t
get on the phone, can’t ask Aunt Tillie for help…

This is the point where you, as their sponsor, MUST realize
that all YOU can do is provide them with the tools and
information they need to succeed, but their success is
up to THEM!

Do you continue to point them to training calls, webinars,
manuals, etc?

Of course!

But that’s where you (for your own sake) need to draw the line.

Don’t fall unto the trap of sitting with them for HOURS
on the phone, explaining the same things over and over or
trying to encourage/motivate them.

If you do, they will suck you dry emotionally and you’ll
have nothing left to give anyone else, and/or you’ll have
no time (or energy) left to recruit others

So what’s the answer?

Lead By Example

The very BEST thing you can do for your team is to remain
in action yourself!

You’ll serve as an inspiration of what CAN be, and your
team will just naturally start doing what you’re doing.

To be an effective sponsor, there are four things you’ll
want to keep in mind

  • Set a personal standard of excellence your team can aspire to.
  • Stay plugged in with your company trainings and your own upline.
  • Keep actively recruiting!
  • TEACH your new team members, don’t manage them

At the end of the day, you must remember…not everyone on
your team (and quite likely very few) will actually roll
up their sleeves and get to work, but that’s not something
you can control.

But inherent in the word sponsor is reSPONSibility.

So after you recruit that new team member, take responsibility
to provide the information, direction and leadership they
need, and a thriving organization will be your reward.

And If By Chance You’re Looking…

Maybe you’re reading this and you’ve been looking for a
company or a sponsor.

Maybe you’ve been discouraged in the past, but SOMETHING
keeps pulling you back to this industry cause you just KNOW
if someone would take the time to show you the ropes,
you’d succeed.

Sponsor More People With Three “Magic” Words

Seems everywhere you look, pretty much everyone you talk to,
three words keep popping up…

“In This Economy”

Many network marketers point to those three words as the
major roadblock in their business, preventing them from
making the sales and/or recruiting as much as they’d like.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The way we use and respond to those words can make all
the difference…they can literally become our “magic words”.

Two Basic Types

The people we encounter both in our every day lives on
Main Street and on the Internet generally fall into two
basic, what I will call, “thinking types”.

The first comes from a perspective of lack. They honestly
believe that there’s not enough to go around, and tend to
buy into that doom and gloom “the sky is falling” way of
thinking. They’re terrified. And they’re looking backward.

These good people will tend to either desperately chase
after a quick hit/get rich quick scheme so they can
“get theirs,” or sit on their hands, feeling victimized,
saying things like “I can’t afford it” or “I can’t take a
chance in this economy.”

The second is forward thinking and has a prosperity mindset.
They agree with people like Jay Abraham, who says in his
book, The Sticking Point Solution

“For all the pain they cause, economic downturns- like the
one we’re in today – allow us to discover that areas of growth
are actually more plentiful in hard times than in boom times.”

These folks take time to look for opportunity and can see
the “big picture.” And they’re looking for something that
makes sense to them.

Abracadabra…

So how do those words, “in this economy” allow us to
connect with BOTH types of people?

The forward thinker is ALREADY looking, aware that a down
economy has people dropping out of the race right and left,
leaving much more room for him. It’s a matter of exposing
him to our opportunity, and pointing to the benefits that
relate to him.

When those that are frightened point to the economy, that’s
when we can step to really HELP them by gently showing them
how they can sensibly create an additional income in their
spare time without leaving their current job.

Either way, “In this economy”, forward thinkers know that
opportunity is everywhere and it’s just a matter of finding
the one that suits them best, or…

“In this economy” people need to do something to protect
their loved ones.

Those three words, when properly framed for your prospect,
can actually help you sponsor more people.

Conclusion

Both approaches assume that you’ve taken time to TALK with
your prospect and know what their concerns/problems are.

Be sure to invest a few minutes asking (the right) questions,
so you can relate the conversation back to THEM.

Always remember, the conversation MUST center on their
needs, wants, pain, and concerns.

When you know what those are, you can offer your solution
for them…“in this economy.”

Editorial Comment

The Great Depression is known to have created the millionaires
whose names are still associated with wealth to this day. These
were forward thinkers who looked for and found opportunity in
a down economy.

Many believe that our current economy is an even more fertile
climate for those who choose to make the best of the opportunities
all around us.

NOW’S the time to look ahead, roll up our sleeves and do what we
can to secure the future for ourselves and those we love while
helping others to do the same in the process.
