It’s a beautiful July day. You know…one of those perfect summer days just meant for playing at the beach, cooking out or merely relaxing in a lounge chair with a good book.
For now, anyway, the playing will have to wait. I have things to do.
Sitting here in my office with my “to do ” list in front of me, I began
thinking about this past weekend…
My youngest son came over yesterday and built shelves in the “new”
shed for me, so I spent the afternoon cleaning out the “old” shed.
What fun! LOL
Anyway…
I found myself surrounded by an unbelievably deep layer of black walnut
shells left behind by an industrious (and obviously well fed) squirrel that
made the shed its home over the winter.
There were shells on and in EVERYTHING!
I began thinking about how one tiny squirrel could manage to create
what I was dealing with…and how that massive blanket of shells
related to our businesses.
First, that little squirrel had a purpose…a mission. It wanted…and
needed…a shelter and a store of food large enough to sustain it through
the winter. So it began to look for a place to nest.
When a small opening in the eave of the shed that allowed access was
discovered, it began carrying black walnuts from the tree in the front
yard and depositing them in every nook and cranny it could find.
(and I mean EVERY!)
Through hot sun and chilling rain, scurrying just ahead of the neighborhood
dogs…nothing stopped that animal from its mission. Over and over, it made
hundreds…no, THOUSANDS…of trips to the tree and back.
All to make it through the winter with plenty to eat.
And so it is with us.
We have a mission. Whatever it might be, with our goal in mind, we begin
looking for our place. Our own magical combination of niche, method and
purpose. When we find a small window of opportunity, the work begins.
We must look at where we are, how far we have to go and/or how much
we have to do and commit to doing SOMETHING every single day. In other
words, establish a DMO, or Daily Method of Operation.
A post card, a phone call, a flier, a video, a blog post…by themselves
might seem like insignificant things. But they begin to accumulate. And if
we keep at it, just like that little squirrel, we’ll have blanketed our market,
and our stuff will be everywhere!
Go to the beach, the barbecue and the lounge chair, sure! Enjoy your
summer as much as you can.
But don’t let a day go by without accomplishing those daily tasks that will
grow your business. Because summer will be over before we know it!
Please Note: Whether you’re reading this is July or January,
the principle is the same. Develop a daily method of operation…
then stick to it!
