Daily Method of Operation?? But…it’s Summertime!

It’s a beautiful July day. You know…one of those perfect summer days just meant for playing at the beach, cooking out or merely relaxing in a lounge chair with a good book.

For now, anyway, the playing will have to wait. I have things to do.

Sitting here in my office with my “to do ” list in front of me, I began
thinking about this past weekend…

My youngest son came over yesterday and built shelves in the “new”
shed for me, so I spent the afternoon cleaning out the “old” shed.
What fun! LOL

Anyway…

I found myself surrounded by an unbelievably deep layer of black walnut
shells left behind by an industrious (and obviously well fed) squirrel that
made the shed its home over the winter.

There were shells on and in EVERYTHING!

I began thinking about how one tiny squirrel could manage to create
what I was dealing with…and how that massive blanket of shells
related to our businesses.

First, that little squirrel had a purpose…a mission. It wanted…and
needed…a shelter and a store of food large enough to sustain it through
the winter. So it began to look for a place to nest.

When a small opening in the eave of the shed that allowed access was
discovered, it began carrying black walnuts from the tree in the front
yard and depositing them in every nook and cranny it could find.
(and I mean EVERY!)

Through hot sun and chilling rain, scurrying just ahead of the neighborhood
dogs…nothing stopped that animal from its mission. Over and over, it made
hundreds…no, THOUSANDS…of trips to the tree and back.

All to make it through the winter with plenty to eat.

And so it is with us.

We have a mission. Whatever it might be, with our goal in mind, we begin
looking for our place. Our own magical combination of niche, method and
purpose. When we find a small window of opportunity, the work begins.

We must look at where we are, how far we have to go and/or how much
we have to do and commit to doing SOMETHING every single day. In other
words, establish a DMO, or Daily Method of Operation.

A post card, a phone call, a flier, a video, a blog post…by themselves
might seem like insignificant things. But they begin to accumulate. And if
we keep at it, just like that little squirrel, we’ll have blanketed our market,
and our stuff will be everywhere!

Go to the beach, the barbecue and the lounge chair, sure! Enjoy your
summer as much as you can.

But don’t let a day go by without accomplishing those daily tasks that will
grow your business. Because summer will be over before we know it!

Please Note: Whether you’re reading this is July or January,
the principle is the same. Develop a daily method of operation…
then stick to it!

SEO; Does it Really Matter?

There are probably a bunch of folks who are going to read this and think that I’ve lost my mind

Others will become angry and get defensive, spouting all their key-word-first-page-of-Google-SEO-optimization lingo (and that’s OK…really, it is)

But my question remains…Does all that stuff REALLY matter?

I mean, look around, people.  Take an HONEST look at what’s happening on the Internet these days.

Focusing on key words and SEO optimization may yield higher Google rankings, but we all know
that being on the first page of Google doesn’t necessarily translate into income.

Why do you suppose that is?

Why is it that so many SEO experts are broke? (and you KNOW they are)

Why is it that several “big names” have recently done an apparent about-face and begun talking
about getting back to basics and learning the foundational principles needed to GENERATE INCOME?

Why?

Listen…really listen…

Because the money that you want is in the pockets of other people!

Sounds pretty “oh, DUH!” doesn’t it?

But it seems to be something that’s been forgotten in all the cool technology at our fingertips

PEOPLE are the ones who send you checks and PayPal you money.

PEOPLE…real people…are the ones giving you their credit card number.

Don’t misunderstand me…

Landing on the first page of Google (or Yahoo or Bing, for that matter) is GREAT, it really is!

But in and of itself, being on page one and $3.50 will get you coffee at Starbucks

Please hear my heart on this.  At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what page you’re on
or how many hits and click throughs you manage to get on your blog/website if you aren’t
giving those who land there something real.

It may sound old fashioned, but people do business with people.  They pull their wallets out again and again for someone they’ve come to know, like and trust.

People are hungry for good service, and those who provide it will win.

All the search engine optimization on the planet can’t give you a stable, ENDURING income if you
don’t take the time to serve.  Remember…

The money you want is in the pockets of other PEOPLE.

Home and Small Business Owners: Build Your Business on Solid Beliefs…Not Feelings

Quite often, business owners make emotional decisions or conduct business based on how they feel. The need to determine and focus on core beliefs and philosophies rather than feelings has always been key, and needs to be stressed as the home and small business industry explodes both on and off line.

To survive and move forward in the competitive marketplace, home and small business owners must determine their beliefs and philosophies.

When joined with solid business principles, your business can continue to move forward despite what/how you might be feeling at the moment.
