I’m probably showing my age here, but heck…
EVERYONE knows I’m no spring chicken!
When I was in the 8th grade, we had a class
called “Social Dancing” once a month. It was
ONLY for eight graders (VERY prestigious, don’t
you know!!)
We had to dress up on that day. Boys in ties
and sport coats, girls in fancy dresses with
crinolines and nylon stockings (believe it or
not, we didn’t have pantyhose back then!)
Secluded in the gymnasium for the afternoon,
we were taught the finer points of the waltz,
foxtrot and other “socially acceptable” dances
for adolescents back in the early 60’s.
To be honest, despite our objections, most of us
LOVED it at the time.
The thinking of the day was that if we were taught
the social graces…including how to dance “properly”
with a member of the opposite sex…that we wouldn’t
be an embarrassment OR line the walls at the next
gathering.
But you know? There were always Wallflowers!
And not because they didn’t know the steps or
they were clumsy. Plain and simple…
They were SOCIAL DORKS!
So what has that got to do with social media?
Because even after all these years of preaching,
teaching and training in the “Graces of Social
Media”, people are STILL acting like dorks out there!
So yesterday, I just HAD to air a few (just a few)
of the things I see on Facebook, LinkedIn and
other sites that are turning really nice folks into
social media wallflowers.
Check this out so it doesn’t happen to you!
And there are LOTS of other things you should know…
Like it’s in bad taste to post pictures of checks and/or
income, and it’s REALLY a no-no to post the link to your
product/opportunity when commenting on someone’s
post, and on and on…
But if you keep these things in mind, you should be
OK on social media:
- Remember it’s SOCIAL…as in a gathering of people
connecting and getting to know one another. - That there are REAL PEOPLE on the other side of your screen.
- If what you’re doing would make YOU cringe if someone
else did it to you…DON’T do it!! (remember the Golden Rule)
And the biggie:
So go out there and play nice…and HAVE FUN!!
